(Photo by Darrell) FOR DIRECTIONS AND FULL INFORMATION, SEE YOUR EMAILED INVITATION IMAGES BY HERB & DARRELL, 8/23/10: http://www.meetup.com/KAYAK-GULF-NATURE-COAST-CENTRAL-FLORIDA-RIVERS/pictures/1037500/ PADDLE DESCRIPTION: 8-10 mis, about four hours - We’ll paddle 4-5mis upstream, enjoy a break stop, and turn back around for a leisurely return with the current. While kayaking the Ocklawaha River, we usually encounter a few obstacles to limbo under, scooch over, or maneuver around, and we never know when we’ll encounter a new dead fall blocking the river, which there’s no need to worry about when paddling upstream and back as we’ll be doing. Because the river has trees on both sides all along the way, this event is an excellent escape from the heat of summer! The water is quite clear, thanks to the Silver River which empties into the Ocklawaha, allowing frequent lovely glimpses of sandy bottoms. Occasionally the river carries us close to the high bluff which borders the river.

My 1st visit here, I was pleased to find that it’s not muddy, but actually runs from springs! After paddling this area, we’ll head for Sutherland Springs. It’s an unusual treat to experience these little-known surprises tucked in away from the Mud River, and it’s fun to paddle the narrow, winding clear water run up to them. When the current is strong, the upstream paddle provides a little workout, and the return is a bit like a water chute–great fun!

We also saw Ospreys, Great Blues, Anhingas and Cormorants already on their nests, so I’m eager to see if babies’ heads are appearing now! It will also be interesting to see if there are any signs of other birds readying their nests. Lake Rousseau itself is always fun and gorgeous year round, so we’ll do our usual rookeries tour to check out all the areas where we’ve enjoyed the nesting season in the past. LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS REMARKABLE LAKE! BELOW IS SANDRA’S 4/3/12 REPORT TO FFWC!
